Doris: An Anthology (1991-2001) / $18.00 Canada & US / $22.00 Int’l
I remember the first time I read this anthology, six or seven years ago. I had joined some friends for an East Coast tour and brought the book along to keep myself entertained during downtime. I read it in the car, at parks, in bars, everywhere I found myself over the course of two weeks, then finished it just as the trip was ending. It changed my life and I’ve been recommending it ever since. Really sweet, thoughtful, and accessible writing, with adorable illustrations. Here’s the blurb from the back of the book: “Cindy writes her zine, Doris, like she is figuring out the human condition. She makes writing about the simplest and most common things – playing music, childhood, cooking, or sex – resonate with universal understanding.”

The Doris Encyclopedia / $22.00 Canada & US / $28.00 Int’l
This book contains issues #19 – #27 of Doris, as well as interviews, columns and newly-published content. Over three-hundred pages of sweet perzine writing on love, anarchy, abuse and healing, radical sobriety, friendship, feminism and more. This is one of my all-time favourite zines, and comes highly recommended to seasoned zinesters and new kids alike.

Mend My Dress: Collected Zines 2005-2007 / $13.00 Canada & US / $17.00 Int’l
Excuse the cliché phrase, but Neely Bat Chestnut has really poured her heart and soul into Mend My Dress, the perzine series that has been collected into this book. It’s cut-and-paste style, mostly typewritten, with extremely vulnerable writing touching on things like riot grrrl and girl love, a family history of abuse (this is your warning), friendship, childhood, punk and more. It’s like getting into someone’s messy diary.

Shotgun Seamstress Zine Collection / $18.00 Canada & US / $24.00 Int’l
This book is so beautiful that I may have squealed and danced in my kitchen when I opened up a boxful of ‘em the other day. It’s the highly-anticipated anthology of Shotgun Seamstress, a zine by and for black punks. Super sweet cut-and-paste layouts with reviews, interviews, and articles on so many musicians and artists that you’ll be kept busy reading and dancing for the year to come. From the back of the book: “Shotgun Seamstress is like the best mix tape anyone has ever made, where radical politics are never sidelined for an easier ride, where good times are never in doubt and where subsumed experiences are revealed as real… The Gories and Void, Nasty Facts and X-Ray Spex, Brontez, Vaginal Davis, punk rock. It’s an endless adventure and this is another way in.”
